Geocaching - A way to Craft an Adventure.

So, on top of feeling very overwhelmed since getting back from vacation (sorry about the lack of updates everyone!), I decided to take on yet another challenge this week.  Beside finishing my first Knit Sock, I decided to create a Geocache!

I got into Geocaching a few weeks ago, and I really like it.  While the CheapGeek looks toward the geekier side of it (using Billion Dollar Satellites to find Tupperware containers in the woods), I look at it as a way to fulfill my childhood want to be a treasure hunter.  Plus, right now, the added incentive is to take Bender for a decent walk.  For some reason, finding a bunch of stickers and Plastic Army men in a box is the encouragement I need to work through some of my lingering joint/malaise issues from Lyme's Disease.

What makes me really happy is that for the most part, this is something everyone in my little geeky, internet/computer-attached-at-all-times family can do.

While hunting is great, I thought creating my own Geocache would be fun.  Creating the actual cache container, log book, and maybe a prize are the easy part....I get to combine my love of crafting with the hobby of geocaching, and it's great to see my creativity expand.

Since Geocaching is about adventure, exploration, and travel, I like putting little Travel related items in some of the caches I visit, as well as creating unique items to put in the Geocaches I plan to create.  These are little Silver Keychains.  I just use a standard, sturdy Keychain Loop, and add some of my cute jewelry charms to each of them.  A little cute Reward for a day of Geocaching!

I'm starting with Micro-Caches, which are smaller containers that require you to bring your own pen, and to be a little more observant while your exploring.  I use Guttermann Adhesive to Decorate/Disguise my Geocaches.  This is a wateproof adhesive normally used by purse-makers (It was recommended to me when I wanted to crochet a purse with a metal clasp, since it's waterproof, and will stick to two different types of materials).  I usually use a water-tight container, and then gussy it up to make it look cool.

A log book is important for most Geocaches.  I use my Loose beads Baggies to store a micro-log for people to sign!

Whew!  Now that I've created a Geocache, and I know where I want to put it... Now I've got to plant it, document where it is, and Submit it!   Luckily, I've managed to do all that within the past week, and now I hope to hear back from Geocaching.com to see if my Cache has been approved!
